ARTIST STATEMENT
With this triptych, I wanted to explore the binary of life and death through literal and abstract means of representation. The Ground of the painting is plywood, a literal, concrete material. The wood is essentially representing a dead tree, and it is the only really thing about the painting, In contrast, the painted trees are lively portrayed, but they are very abstract-the paint only represents an idea of a tree. These trees are but simulacra of the real trees. The truth of this triptych, then, is that what is seemingly alive is fake and what is actually dead is real.
